It’s been quite a while since my last post of any significance, I seem to forget this place exists sometimes. Nevertheless, time for another post – this time about the Dota 2 beta.

Now, as most of us would be aware, Valve has been slowly introducing players to the beta over the last few months as a way to build excitement and test out the game. There are now players of all skill levels floating around on the servers, and it’s excellent to see the Australian/South Asia servers highly populated all the time.

Being somewhat of a newbie to Dota, but a player of LoL, I had only the most basic of understanding in what to expect. I’m pleased to say however, that picking the whole process up took little more than about an hour of trial and error – meaning even new players should be able to get the hang of it with a few games.

Visually the game is quite nice; with stylized character models and fantastic portrait art. Ability effects are quite pleasing too, with moves like Zeus’s Thundergod’s Wrath, or Invoker’s Chaos Meteor giving some impressive visuals and sounds.

In terms of the audio, a number of the characters have various entertaining comments to make as you play, and hopefully as the game further develops, we will eventually end up with all characters conversing with the player – except perhaps Silencer.

Overall, after about 6 hours of play, my general impression is that it will prove to be quite a fun game, though the competitive side will require a medium to high skill level to get the full amount of enjoyment from it.
